DEVELOPING A SUSTAINABLE POWER FUTURE
POWER-GEN India & Central Asia is the region's premier power industry event - connecting thousands of international power professionals and providing unrivalled business opportunities to reach into one of the world's most exciting power markets.
Background
India is home to over 1.1 billion people and is forecast to have the world's
largest population soon after 2030. Currently the fourth largest economy in the
world and the second fastest growing, India's huge economic growth is having a
profound effect on the country's demand for electricity.
India has the fifth largest power sector in the world, with an installed
generation capacity of 141 GW as of January 2008. In order to achieve the Indian
Government's aim of providing 'Power for All by 2012', installed generation
capacity will need to be 200 GW by 2012.
This mission forms the backbone of the
11th Five-Year Plan which came into effect in 2007 and runs to 2012.
Greater involvement of the private sector will be key to achieiving 78 GW of
additional capacity over the next five years. This target is estimated to cost
in the region of US$ 180 billion, and includes associated transmission and
distribution improvements.
